On Line Chef Cooking and Entertaining Secrets - Peak Into My Professional Home Kitchen

In 2002, when housing prices were starting to rise, I proposed to my husband that, with our forth kid on the way, that we look for a bigger house. He agreed to LOOK. We looked at several areas but wanted to move to a part of town that was closer to the freeways and shopping. When we walked into this house, you would have said, like we said, how odd. It was a 5 bedroom, 4 bath house with over 3,300 square feet of living space. The master was downstairs with four rooms and a HUGE loft upstairs. The kitchen was average with little room for a kitchen table. The reason the house was odd was that the entire downstairs had a 12 by 12 tile floor which had not been completed. The laundry room tile butted against the hall tile but did not match. The worst part was that they attempted to make it match so it just looked off. The master had a wood floor which was elevated, probably over the tile underneath. The walls were painted with watered down primer and they painted around the pictures that were hanging on the walls. No one was living upstairs where we found unpacked boxes and stained carpet. Bottom line, the house did not show well.

But I had a dream. I knew this house was a diamond in the rough. My vision included gutting the kitchen for a gourmet kitchen I could teach out of. We got rid of the family room to make the kitchen and eating area more like a great room. We eventually put laminate flooring all over the house, upstairs and down which made cleaning up after the kids a breeze. The kids are all upstairs and my husband and I have a suite downstairs. Dan finally gave in when I told him that we could view the stairs from our room so that any female teen aged child of ours who attempted to bring a male teen aged child up the stairs would be seen and shot! Just kidding. But the house seemed just right.

This is what I did to the kitchen:

1. Had a 5 foot by 10 foot dual level-island installed. There is granite on the top, custom wood cabinets on the bottom with plenty of storage and electrical, an extra-deep double stainless sink with an instant-hot water faucet, two built in soap dispensers and a button for the garbage disposal. One side of the island has three pull out baskets where I store onions, potatoes and squash and plastic ware, set vertically and on the other side is my proud invention of a cooling rack. It is made of aluminum inside and has 5 racks. The door has mesh so that the hot items placed on the cooling rack won't steam. Finally, I have four stainless steel bar stools and an additional 8 checkerboard bars stools that I use for classes.

2. I put in two self cleaning, extra-wide electric conventional/convection ovens and a warming drawer. I use my double ovens several times a week. Sometimes I even wish I had a third! The warming drawer comes in handy during my classes or dinner parties to keep plates or extra food warm.

3. I put in deep, large storage drawers for pot lids and small appliances like a juicer and spice grinder.

4. I had butcher block cutting boards installed in two areas of my kitchen, one right above the trash and one on the other side of the kitchen. The one over the trash works well because I can toss the remains of anything I'm preparing easily. The other cutting board is nice, specifically when my kids are cooking with me because it is just out of the way that I can still watch what they are doing but they are not in my way of whatever I am preparing. Also, the second cutting board sits below my appliance garage which houses the mixer, food processor and vacuum sealer. The appliance garage has an outlet but the cutting board allows me to pull the appliances out when I am using them.

5. My favorite toy is my pot filler. I think now pot fillers are standard in custom kitchens, but when I installed mine five years ago, the contractor looked at me funny. The pot filler is a cold water spout on a pivoting arm that extends the area of my six burner Viking range top. I can put a stock pot on any of the burners and fill them with water. I use the pot filler all the time. It protects my back because I don't have to fill and left the filled pots from my sink to the burners.

6. I added a wine glass and bottle holder above, a plate rack setting ten dinner plates within reach, some book shelves to show off some of my favorite cookbooks, and a shelf for alcohol where I keep my Sherries, Madeira's, and cognacs.

7. I choose all stainless steel appliances. My close friend, who is a CIA trained chef and married to another CIA trained chef says that she hates stainless appliances because it reminds her too much of industrial kitchens. Well, I never tire of the look. I do not care that there are handprints on it. This just lets visitors know that my kids are around. I do not mind that they are not magnetic because all the ma5A7gnetic stuff just clutters the kitchen. I don't even mind the water stains in the sink. That just proves how much I use it. I do not have time to wipe it down because it is constantly in use.

When I prepared to have the kitchen redone, I acted as my own general contractor. I read up on all my sub contractors to make sure that none were in bad standing. I took the proper insurance precautions to make sure that I was covered in case of an accident. I kept on top of all the subs that they were sticking to my time frames and incentivized them financial to finish on time. Being 7 months pregnant was my incentive to have the job done in 3 months. I cleaned out my dining room and living room and converted them into a kitchen during the construction. I had my fridge, microwave, gas camping burners, shelves for food and plastic ware, and my laundry room sink for washing dishes. It worked out nicely.

I love my kitchen. There are a few things I would do differently, but that is for another article.

How to Buy a Safe Backyard Playset

Parents are buying their kids backyard playsets or jungle gyms today more than ever. We know they're good for our kids development and it allows everyone to have fun. However, a lot of parents dont know what to look for in a backyard playset when buying one. This lack of knowledge can even be a hazard to their children if they buy dangerous products.

One of the most important things in buying any kind of playset is safety. You should never buy anything that can fall apart or hurt your child in any way. Check and make sure the screws are going to fit where they go. If a screw point is sticking out it can cut your child or even take out an eye. I know that sounds like it will happen but stranger things occur every day and its best to be prepared.

Another thing to watch for is splinters. Make sure that the wood is cut and sanded correctly so that nothing can hurt your child. Also make sure the wood is treated for rot so that there is no chance it will fall apart for a long time. Buying a wooden playset is an investment for your childs physical growth and happiness and you dont need that investment falling apart in only a few years.

Another thing to look for is accessories and add-ons. Ask yourself if your kid will want things added on at a later date and also if it has enough accessories attached to it now. You dont want to get home and realize that the backyard gym doesn't make everyone happy. The best way to help with this is get backyard swingsets that already have everything attached (rope ladder, fort, slides, slings, etc).

One important thing to look for is value. Shop around and dont just stick with one store. A lot of people cant afford to spend a few thousand dollars on a nice wooden playset. However, most people can spend a few hundred for one, maybe even a used one. A used playset is a very good option if it has been taken care of.

Overall, the main things to look for when shopping for a playset are value, durability, and accessories. One of the best solutions is to take your kids with you when you shop. You can473 then tell them how much to spend and let them pick one out themselves. This means that the kids have pride they picked it out and you have pride that your kids are happy.

Our homes are becoming the castles we dream about. And now, more of us are building the backyard playsets our children need to be safe and have fun at home. Learn more about backyard fun at http://swingsets4kids.info

7 Tips For Building Koi Fish Ponds

Are you thinking of building a koi fish pond? Keeping these magnificent fish in your garden can be great fun and it is not as difficult as you might think. With the right care koi can live for decades and some can become almost a meter long. Follow these tips to plan your pond properly so your koi will live long and happy life.

1 Depth is important

Depth of your pond is crucial. The minimum recommended depth is 4 feet, however it is much better to give your fish six or even 8 feet deep pond. This will ensure that your koi are protected from raccoons, cats and other animals who love a fish dinner. Deeper fish pond also helps to keep water cool in hot summer days

2 Make your pond as large as you can

Small ponds are not suitable for koi. Remember, with time koi can grow quite large and they will need a lot of room. Also there are so many color variations of koi, that with time you will probably want to add more fish to your pond. So it is better to create a large pond from the start than rebuild it later. About ten thousand gallons is a good size for a koi pond, bigger would be even better.

3 Use fish pond heater in colder months

Unlike tropical fish, koi don't suffer much from cold; however you should never let your pond freeze completely. Installing a proper pond heater will always keep an opening in the ice. Also keep in mind, that koi only grow when the water is warm, so with a heater your fish will grow faster

4 Plan some shade for your koi

When selecting a spot for your pond, make sure it is out of direct sunlight. Also keeping water plants like water lilies in your pond are a good idea - not only they add beauty to the overall design, but they also provide shade for the fish. However, you should avoid building your koi pond under trees. Cleaning a fish pond of fallen leaves is no fun.

5 Plan to install a bird net

There are many birds of prey that would love to steal your koi. Don't give them the opportunity; plan your pond location so it is possible to cover it with a net.

6 Keep insecticides away from your pond

When landscaping your pond keep in mind that you should not use any insecticides or herbicides near the water. Even a small amount of common garden poison can kill your beautiful fish.

7 Get proper equipment for your pond

Several accessories are absolutely essential for a healthy koi pond. Ideally you will have to invest into a water pump, filtration system, water aerator and an ultraviolet sterilizer. If the water in your pond is still, your fish might get sick and eventually die. Koi pond filtration systems are expensive, so as an alternative you can make your own homemade filters.

A Stair Lift Guide

There are three ways of providing access between floors for the handicapped or disabled; residential elevators, stair lifts and platform lifts. By far the most popular method of residential lift is the home chair stair lift.

The reasons why they are preferred by the majority is because of ease of installation and price. Residential elevators and platform lifts start at around 10k to 16k. The price of a home stair lift will depend on its type. A straight type will range in price from 2.5k - 4k, whereas a curved model is custom made and will cost anything between 5k to 20k. The complexity of the installation ultimately dictates the cost of installing a curved lift. The cost is impossible to know before the supplier carries out an onsite inspection.

Drive Type

There are four types of drive types. However, the vast majority of new stair lifts use the rack and pinion system.

Most cable drive systems use a strong steel cable - aircraft cable is the norm. The main disadvantage of this type of drive system is that the ride can be less than p5B4erfectly smooth. However, technology has moved on and those companies that still use this drive system say that the ride is as smooth as any other type. Summit and Ameriglide stair lifts both use this drive type.

Chain drive systems are used only for heavy duty models. They are loud and not really used in residential stair lifts.

The screw drive uses a lifting mechanism with a screw driven actuator. This is powered by a rechargeable battery. Again, this type is not used in home models.

The rack and pinion drive system is by far the most popular type for residential stair lifts. Rack and pinion systems - meaning gear and teeth - used to have to require regular cleaning and replacement of gear oil. However today's home units have sealed drive systems that require no maintenance at all.

The Track or Rail

This is the base along which the carriage travels. The track is always fitted to the stairs and never to the wall. This means that a track can be fitted to either side of the stairs. Tracks used in straight stair lifts are made of extruded aluminum whereas curved ones usually use a mixture of both steel and aluminum.

Power

With early designs the power source was AC mains. But today, most stair chair lifts are powered by DC 12 volt rechargeable batteries. Batteries are preferred because a trailing cable is used with AC mains powered stairlifts. The cable is reeled out and reeled back in each and eve5B4ry time the chair travels up and down the stairway, which causes wear and tear. Also, battery powered units can still be used during power outages. Some states prohibit the installation of any appliance unless it is installed by a qualified technician.

Swivel Seats

All makes of stair chair lifts offer this option. There are two types; 90 degree and 180 degree swivel seats. A 90 degree swivel seat is mounted on the upstairs side of the chassis and fold in one direction. A 180 degree swivel seat folds in both directions. One manufacturer, Stannah, makes a motorized swivel seat.

Self Diagnosing

Many brands like the Acorn Superglide and the Stannah stair lift have integrated circuit boards that can help diagnose problems with your lift and decrease maintenance costs.

Accessories

All manufacturers offer a mixture of accessories either as standard or optional. What you choose will affect the cost of the stair lift.

Perch stair lifts allow the passenger to remain standing. This is excellent for those who have problems bending at the knee. The Acorn Superglide Perch is one such example.

Just about all home units come with safety belts. Some brands come with retractable lap inertia belts, while others offer 3-point fixed shoulder belts.

Installation

Installation of today's straight models is quite easy. Many manufacturers and dealers encourage customers to self-install. However, a custo516mer should never self install and the Accessibility Equipment Manufacturer's Association strongly advises against it.

The installation of a residential lift really can allow someone to regain their home and independence. The chair stair lift that is best for a customer will depend on their requirements and budget.

A New Bathroom Vanity Can Transform the Room

It may be time to remodel, or give your hallway bathroom with the 1970's decor a facelift. Perhaps you just want a design change to reflect your personal style. Whatever reasons you may have for tackling your bathroom as the next home improvement project, one of the most important furniture pieces you will need to select with care is a single bathroom vanity or a double bathroom vanity. The bathroom vanity tends to be the focal point or centerpiece in any bathroom so finding the right one is important.

Before you get started on your bathroom home improvement project, take the time to measure the space you will have for all your fixtures. If you are replacing the shower and toilet, measure these spaces and the size of the new fixtures you would like to put in their place. When measuring for your bathroom vanity, you will want to decide if you would like a single bathroom vanity or a double bathroom vanity. If you have a small space to work with or only one person uses the lavatory each day, a single vanity will be the obvious choice. However if you have the space, a double vanity is always a luxurious upgrade for your bathroom especially if more than one person at a time will be using it everyday.

Another thing to keep in mind when remodeling your bathroom is the interior design theme you are trying to create. When choosing a new bathtub, sink, vanity, or even the plumbing fixtures, consistency with a design theme is key. Whether you like antique, rustic wood, traditional, or contemporary styles for your new bathroom make sure that all elements work together to create a cohesive look. Nothing feels worse than spending all the money, time, and effort on re-doing your bathroom only to be dissatisfied with the final result because it just doesn't all work together.

There are many places to find vanities and such for your project, but one of the best places to find the lowest prices for your bath and shower fixtures or for discount bathroom vanities is online. If you take your time to find the right online company to do business with, you can find the best price for your new vanity, as well as get added discounts like free shipping or other incentives. Shopping online also helps you save time and energy, because you never have to leave home to find the perfect bathroom furniture and fixtures.

So no matter what reason you have for remodeling your bathroom make sure you do your homework to find the best bathroom vanity and other fixtures that may need replacing. Measure the space you have to work with in your bathroom decide on the decor theme you want to create with your bathroom facelift, and try shopping online for your bathroom vanity, shower, bathtub, and other accessories online for the best prices.

Home Improvement Ideas That Won't Break the Piggy Bank

An attractive kitchen is one of the things a person notices and remembers about a home. Rather then spending large amounts of cash having cabinets and surfaces replaced, try picking up new doors and hardware, and maybe a can of wood stain or paint. Old cabinets can be freshened up with a brush and screwdriver in an afternoon for a lot less than a complete overhaul. The same tricks work for appliances which may feature removable plates. New plates can be ordered in different colors or materials. Some may even be reversible already, so if you want to remodel a white kitchen darker you only need to loosen a few screws.

Light fixtures can be changed by following the included directions. Old styles can be made modern in a half hour. Using eco-friendly fixtures can improve a room's attractiveness while adding cleaner light and lowering your electric bill. Doorknobs, handles, and other hardware throughout the house can be retouched for a better look.

Landscaping can be done with nothing more than a hand spade. Local gardeners and groups may meet and share plants. Some species that are commonly used spread, and a neighbor may want to get rid of some beautiful plants. Ask around and improve the outside of your home without having to sell off the furniture inside. If you already do some gardening, check on line for a seed exchange. The price of postage may be all it takes for you to trade vegetable seeds for a tree seedling or a small shrub.

Flooring is normally the realm of experts, but kits exist that are installed over existing floors. Several hundred dollars can be saved by doing the work yourself while getting rid of worn out floors.

If your carpet is looking used but you can't afford to lay new carpeting, rent a shampooer and purchase the cleani9D9ng agents for it. Using it in a high traffic room can put new life into it and put off replacement.

Adding a new toilet seat in the bathroom and a few new towels can give a newer look to you bathroom. Replace chipped tiles around your bathroom and clean the group to complete the look. A new sink may not be difficult for a DIY-er to handle either.

Hiring a professional to inspect your home and take care of small repairs can be a good thing as well. When small details like wiring and water fixtures are reseated and touched up it tells visitors that you care about your home. The price of a pro for a few hours may be more than enough to make up for the equipment and tools you would have to purchase yourself.

Watch your front door. A loose handle and cracking paint around it will be the first thing to greet visitors. Adding stronger fixtures, a new light kit, or paint to the frame can do wonders for the image of your home. Metal frames can be painted over as well, without requiring a new frame.

New curtains on your windows present a better image. Anyone driving by can see your windows so if the colors are off or they are getting tatty, just hanging a new set will make everyone feel better.

If you don't have enough space for a proper garden behind your home, consider flower boxes. Installing them underneath a window is easy and small flowers growing inside them makes a home warmer. If you enjoy cooking you can install one near the kitchen as a boxed herb garden.

Give Special Attention To Your Bathroom Vanity Cabinet

No matter how your bathroom is well decorated, if you do not get your vanity cabinet right, your bathroom will still not look right. To complement all your effort in choosing your vanity lights, your vanity mirror, etc. you must choose the perfect cabinet to give it a perfect finish.

When you choose your cabinet, think about four simple things. Think about what you need, your budget, the size of your bathroom, and your style. Be sure you have answers to these questions before deciding what to buy in your favorite home equipment shopping center.

The first thing to consider is the need. If you need more storage space, then you might consider something that has a lot of room in it. A great way to determine how much space you really need in your cabinet is to list all things you need in your bathroom. Try downsizing then to include only the essentials to save some space. If you need more aesthetics, however, then you can sacrifice some space. Cabinet in your guest room might not need the same space as your master bedroom because your guests will not stay long in your house to need that much space in their vanity cabinet.

Another thing to consider is your budget. A great tip in this area is to size up what you can afford for new bathroom furniture. Then take that number and spend 10% less than that number. But the truth to the matter is, a more expensive cabinet does give more to the owner, so you might want to really decide on this one. Keep in mind that you also need to spend to mount it in your bathroom. The cost of plumbing should also be considered.

Perhaps another crucial consideration is the size of the bathroom. It is only logical to put a huge vanity cabinet in a huge bathroom. For obvious reason, you do not want to sacrifice more on ease and comfort inside your small bathroom by having a bulky cabinet. In fact, going for a smaller vanity tucked on a corner will give your bathroom a more spacious look.

Your own style should also be taken into consideration. Anything you put inside your bathroom speaks a little something about you. So you don not want your guests to think that you are a disorganized person by having a mismatching cabinet to the bathroom theme. If your bathroom has a traditional theme, then you go for the wood made cabinet, usually with a stone sink, to match the theme. A contemporary bathroom should have a cabinet with copper vessels and some with stainless cabinet edges. The cut should be clean and straight forward to match the straightforward look of your contemporary bathroom.

The main disadvantage of this type of drive system is that the ride can be less than perfectly smooth.

The cable is reeled5B4 out and reeled back in each and every time the chair travels up and down the stairway, which causes wear and tear.

Many manufacturers and dealers encourage custome53Ars to self-install. However, a customer should never self install and the Accessibility Equipment Manufacturer's Association strongly advises against it.

The installation of a residential lift really can allow someone to regain their home and independence. The chair stair lift that is best for a customer will depend on their requirements and budget.

List Building - The Chance People Miss in Their Site

There are times that when you visit a site that you are interested with, the owner does not even give you some follow-ups. Of course not all of us want these follow-ups, but if you are really interested with the product or service, then you want updates. And looking at it in the perspective of the business owner, giving your potential clients updates is really beneficial to your business.

Yes, this is one of the chances where the web site owners miss to market their products or service. They get contented with those customers who buy their products without thinking that if they build a list of customers and potential customers, they would be able to increase their sales.

Look, if you have 200 customers who buy and you have established a list of 5000, then even if the 200 customers will buy your product, you have still 4800 potential clients that would add up to your sales. Just make sure that you send your entire list updates and build the trust they need to convince them buying your product.

If you want to succeed in your business online or offline, make sure that you are building your list. These people in your list are the people who will bring you to the joy of success in your undertaking. Do not miss this chance. People visit your site because they are interested. Just give a little push and you will become successful in engaging them with your product through list building.

House Mold Problems

Building Customer Loyalty

The following tips can apply to virtually any profession or industry. If you think that these are self-evident, then I challenge you to take a personal assessment. Print this page and keep the list on your desk for one week. Place a checkmark next to each item when you conduct an activity that fulfills one of these objectives. Can you check all of these items in one week? Are you actively practicing the commitment that you desire from your customers?

If you want loyalty, you have to give it

Makes a list of your most important customers or clients. For your general customers or clients, demonstrate your commitment in general terms and especially when they need you. For the most important customers, demonstrate your commitment and let them know how much you appreciate them. Sometimes loyalty takes sacrifice.

Communicate

Building a lasting relationship requires communication. Communication means listening to your customer or client, as well as conveying your own message. One sided communication is a speech, mutual communication is a conversation. Communicate when things are going well and when there are problems. When things are going as expected, bring it to their attention. When there are problems, provide the scope of the challenge and your solutions, preferably before the customer even knows that the problems exists. This builds credibility, confidence and trust.

Understand Your Customer's Goals

The products or services that you provide are only meaningful in the context of your customer's objectives. What you do is intended achieve financial or strategic objectives, or fulfill a need. Understand and communicate your value from the perspective of the customer. Be aware of changes that may affect the customer requirements and your perceived value so you can adjust accordingly.

Be Consistent

One of the best ways to manage expectations is to be consistent. Be consistent with your quality, your responsiveness and delivery of goods or services. Establish a routine schedule for communication with your most important customers, so you can call "just to talk" and check the pulse of the relationship.

Build Credibility

There are two easy ways to build credibility. First, do what you say you are going to do. If you leave a message to call back or make a commitment for follow-up, then call when you said you would call. Even if you do not have all the answers, call when you commit to call back. The second way to build credibility is to take time to get the best answer. Sometimes you may not know the best response to a situation or request. Ask for time to research and come back with the most accurate answer or information that you can obtain. Taking time for accuracy can be far more beneficial to your customer than a quickly but incorrect reply.

Cracker Jack Surprise

Give your customers something more than expected. Don't tell them in advance, just do something to demonstrate your appreciation. It can be as simple as a greeting card, email or small token to show your appreciation. Loyalty is a relationship, and it should be nurtured as you would care for a friend. Do not take it for granted.

Package Yourself to Shine

Often I talk about public relations as being relationships with your public. I believe building personal relationships is critical to business success. Most people want to do business with people that they like. One way of building relationships is through your personal branding, differentiating yourself from your competitors by being you, and allowing that uniqueness to shine.

You are also the package, just like a product. What does your package look like? How's the design, colour and look? What message does your personal image send?

Your image is a bit like the weather. People notice when it's extremely good or extremely bad. In person how you shake hands, make eye contact, how you conduct yourself in social situations and the clothes you choose to wear help to build your personal brand. You need to take care of the details.

Your clothes, appearance and grooming really are the external image of your brand. What image are you projecting?

If we look at famous brands and the "look" they project through their people, Virgin Blue, in Australia as an example, has a strong corporate image of being friendly, fresh and cheeky. Qantas on the other hand has an image that is far more conservative, more corporate. Both companies spend millions on getting their look right. Not just the external branding of logos and signage but the uniforms and image of the people within the organisations.

Everything is totally co-coordinated from the outfits to the shoes, hosiery, earrings and luggage it's a coordinated professional look as they can't afford to have anyone in those companies presenting negatively. Jetstar on the other hand have a completely different image. It looks more casual and down-market and portrays an image of being cheap, no frills. So much so that the credibility and trust of the airline is questioned. Jokes are made about its inefficiency and safety record although there is no negative record to support those rumours.

Not all organisations have a uniform but there is definitely an underlying code of dressing particularly in the corporate environment which is smart, polished and professional.

Now having said that it doesn't mean we all need to look and dress the same. By understanding the brand qualities you want to project with the work you do and the customer you want to attract you can create a look that is suitable, creative and stylish to help you stand out.

To begin, write down some adjectives of the type of person or brand you would like to be or project. Think of yourself as the product you are designing a package for. Cut out and collect some words, images and colours from magazines. Cut out images of clothes and shapes that appeal to you and reflect the words you have chosen for yourself. Create a brand portfolio of ideas and visual examples. Establish a strong visual image that is your blueprint.

As you do this exercise you will begin to discover your style and what appeals to you. This is your logo your own personal brand. It is a very useful exercise as you can now take your brand portfolio to an image consultant or a photographer, graphic designer, web designer or any other consultant who is helping you to build the brand and image of your business.

Begin to think and feel your new brand image and live your new image until it becomes part of you.
